| Description | In Slovakia as an endemic area of nodular dirofilariosis (Dirofilaria repens) unmissed entomological research of vectors of this disease. Therefore our study was focused to the detection and species identification of microfilariae in mosquito populations in Eastern Slovakia. Using the PCR method, the presence of Dirofilaria repens and D. immitis microfilariae was examined in 8,400 mosquitoes of 8 species (Aedes vexans, Ae. cinereus, Ae. rossicus, Culex pipiens, Culiseta annulata, Ochlerotatus sticticus, Oc. cantans, and Oc. caspius). The collected mosquitoes originated from six locations in two districts (Košice and Trebišov) of Eastern Slovakia. A positive finding of D. repens was observed and confirmed by subsequent sequencing in the Aedes vexans mosquitoes collected in Paňovce (1 sample) and Košické Olšany (2 samples) villages. |
