Description The Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território at the Universidade de Lisboa, or the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon is the most important academic geography institution in Portugal. Geographers are sparsely located in an older building of the Faculty of Arts (Faculdade de Letras ) and in a nearby light barrack construction. Department currently has 182 professionals, of which 75 are university teachers of all ranks. Impressive is also the number of students in all degree programs. There are around 750 students currently studying the geography and about a hundred more having geography as the second subject in connection with their involvement in the fields of Asian, African and cross-cultural studies in general . The Institute is divided into two units: 1 ) research, 2 ) education and training . Each unit is divided into lower formations called clusters (= "group"). Department is accredited for four doctoral research areas: physical geography, human geography, regional development and planning, GIS and cartography, and geographic education.
