Description | The paper is focused on the word order properties of the the Czech preterital auxiliar nesl jsem in Baroque Czech. The paper is based on data gained from the private corpus of Czech Baroque prints (or representative parts of these prints in some cases) that were printed in the period between 1650 and 1750. In conclusion, the results could be summarized as follows: in the analyzed texts, the preterital auxiliary behaves like a prototypical enclitic. This is evidenced by the following properties: 1. it is dominant in the post-initial position, 2. it is repelled by the conjunctions a, ale, i, 3. it cannot be combined with negation, 4. it cannot be a host-word of the traditional enclitic words -li and -ť, 5. it cannot be isolated from the l-participle in its right domain. In certain conditions, preterital auxiliar can proclitize. The preterital auxiliar is prototypically positioned in the post-initial position (it is a prototypically 2P-enclitic). Neverless the preterital auxiliar occurs also in a medial, pre-final and final position; these positions are especially connected with the traditional verb-adjacent word order of Czech enclitic and are indicating a historical competition between post-inicitial and verb-adjacent word-order in the depelopment of Czech enclitic. |
