Description Emergency maps are traditionally created for three basic purposes: planning, evacuation, and crisis management. Keeping in mind the specifics of each purpose it is obvious that spatial data used for maps preparation and production must be differently visualized even for the same type of emergency situation. Adaptive cartography is a promising methodology dealing with the changing demands of map users. A broad overview of adaptive cartographic approaches is presented with a list of context influencing factors. The adaptive cartography concept is further applied in web based environment and an extension of Web Map Service is proposed. Both conceptual and technological principles are then used for pilot scenario FLOOD.
