Description | In the paper, the author analyses the first and very strict denouncement of Roman oratory during the period of the beginning of Roman Principate declared by L. (or M.) Annaeus Seneca the Elder, father of the philosoper Seneca (Sen. Contr. 1, praef., 1). At the same time, she questions many common evaluations proclaiming "the decline of Roman rhetoric" based on the improper interpretation of Seneca's judgement through the thorough analysis of already mentioned Seneca's passage. She comes to the conclusion that Seneca's aims are particularly didactic, and thus his judgment is to be understood as a sort of educational activation of the reader rather than the real evaluation of the contemporary rhetorical praxis. |
