Description | In my research I take up ethnographic studies of student radio stations. I am interested in what young people learn besides getting ready for the world of media, and mainly the development of a young person in such a group. As a researcher, I realized that I would get much deeper into the problem by becoming a member of the studied group. I reflect on how I adapted to the selected group using three strategies. These changed over time as I rose in the group's social hierarchy. Beginning as a novice, I quickly became the radio station's director; from a visitor I turned into a native. My research changed with me. The advantages and dangers this approach can yield are the subject of my reflections on the course of this research. |
