Description | Chronic fatigue syndrome (CSF) represents a disorder or a group of disorders characterized by persistent fatigue lasting more than 6 months (attacks and remissions are possible), not substantially relieved by rest, limiting common daily activities of more than 50%. The syndrome may also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, post-viral fatigue syndrome and others. It is a neurological disorder according to WHO. The incidence reaches around 7/1000 and more. Typically presents with post-exertional malaise, mental and physical exhaustion, unrefreshing sleep, polyarthralgias and polymyalgias, sore throat, cognitive difficulties. However, patients suffer also with any others nonspecific symptoms like orthostatic intolerance, digestive disturbances, anorexia, depression, heart and respiration problems, and lymphadenopathy. There must not be present cause of the syndrome in any known disease. As possible cause of the syndrome are considered: hypothalamic- pituitary- adrenal axis abnormalities, low blood pressure, immune dysfunction, infection by viruses (EBV, mononucleosis) and other infections. None of these suggestions was supported by hard data. There is no diagnostic laboratory test or biomarker for CSF. It is simply a syndrome, probably part of a disease that we exactly do not know, closest to neurasthenia. |
