Description | Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) represents a unique technique with outstanding detection capability and excellent spatial resolution. It makes this hyphenated system appropriate for analysis of solids where information on two- or three-dimensional distribution of elements is required for understanding a development of processes in sampled material in time and space. In this lecture, characterisitics and operation parameters of a particular laser ablation system and physicochemical properties, which influence ablation rate, degree of fractionation, ionisation in ICP source and repeatibilty/reproducibility of LA-ICP-MS signals will be discussed together with practical examples of LA-ICP-MS application in analysis of biological, geological materials and biominerals. |
