Description | Presented paper provides information about the physical habitat of the medieval inhabitants of Brno on the basis of a medical anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from archaeological research in the Cathedral St. Peter and St. Paul in Brno. There has been investigated 250 graves with skeletal remains of 268 individuals (204 adults and 64 children) and other bones from backfill, at least 250 individuals. The residents of Brno died mostly in the fourth and fifth decade of their life, but almost one third of women had died in the age between 20 to 30 years. Surveyed individuals had usually short and low skull with moderately broad part of face, high orbits a relatively wide nasal region. The average body height was 176.5 cm for men and 155.5 cm for women. On the skeletal remains, there were found signs of degenerative productive and rheumatic diseases, traumas, inflammation and metabolic diseases. The most interesting findings were signs of bone metastases of malignant tumor on one of the male skulls. |
