Description The issue of advance directives is one of the key problems discussed in applied ethics. In my talk I assess the role that the concepts of personal identity and self-concern play in advance directives. It seems to be difficult to justify why advance directives should be binding on the basis of the dominant theories of personal identity. I attempt to show that these problems are caused by the dominant conception of self-concern, which I consider incorrect. By accepting an alternative theory of self-concern a possibility opens to justify the intuition that advance directives should be binding.
