| Description | The main issue of this work, which is to clarify the status of sports stars, icons and heroes. The objective is the definition of terms, where to each term will be ascribed relevant characteristics and everything will be demonstrated on examples from history and the present. In this way we can liken athletes to other publicly-working people, such as political and artistic personalities who have usually similar role in society. Very important will be also look back into history, where we show the functioning of the need of celebrities and heroes in society. By means of this issue we will get into some cases where elite athletes are replacing missing elites of respective country. Our topic is partly focused on the cult of sportsmen issue as well. We cannot forget even media, which are contributing to image of elite athletes. Scientific methods used in this work are comparison, recherché of specialized literature, monitoring of mass media and comparison of cultural industry. Contribution of this work is answer to questions about problematic aspects of the professional sport and clarification of relevant terms. |
