Description There is only a partial knowledge of the grandparents’ role in contemporary society. Previous papers shown a high solidarity from the oldest generations to the younger and a lifelong parental role. Due these findings I have concentrate on grandparents care for their grandchildren in contemporary society and the intensity of carrying out this important social role. At first I have proved that Czech grandparents take care of their grandchildren similarly as grandparents in neighbouring countries and there are average care givers from the European point of view. The caregiving is quite intensive in some cases and vary with regard to age of grandchildren and grandparents, marital status and education. The geographical proximity and marital status of middle generation play are important factors too.
