Description | The theme of the article is trans-disciplinary approach to the study of new media through the analysis of the long-term relationships between art, science and technology. This approach, by Siegfried Zielinski called as variantology, tries to see some research questions of new media in a broader context and connect them with knowledge of disciplines that usually stay outside the discourse of media (such as theology, classical philology, or history of science). However, does so without the initial ambition to redefine the concepts of media and art. The work aims to introduce variantology as a method of research and way of thinking about new media. Therefore, the text primarily focuses on understandable explanation of methodology, variantology's basic principles and tools for scientific exploration. The theme of variantology is set in the wider debate about methodology of new media art and is connected with related research approaches such as media archaeology, new history, and Foucault´s archaeology of knowledge. |
