Description One of the more problematic current institutional structures is the mainstream for-profit enterprise, developed in the past 200 years in co-evolution with an expansionist economy, propelled by cheap and abundant fosil fuels. The paper looks at some alternatives to this prevalent model at a time when this expansionist economy begins to lose its intellectual legitimacy as well as its environmental and energy base, with more and more voices caling for a degrowth economy. The text looks at definitions of "social enterprise" with emphasis on the environmental and degrowth potential of this approach. It introduces six generic types of social enterprises/alternative economies, which can be an inspiration in the search for a new entrepreneurial model, and discusses some of their characteristics and survival strategies.
