Description This article deals with the non-rational aspects of education, specifically with the ritual dimension of relationships in the classroom. It presupposes the significance of rituals in pupil-to-pupil and pupil-to-teacher interactions. The naturalized nature of rituals can be problematized in situations where some categories of pupils lack the competencies to perform the appropriate ritual behaviour. Does this happen in ethnically diverse classrooms? The goal of this article is to discuss the advantages of interaction ritual theories and their contributions to educational ethnography in ethnically mixed classrooms. What aspects of interactional dynamics does the theory enable us to explore, and what particularities in group social dynamics does it uncover? I demonstrate the analytical possibilities of the interaction ritual perspective which is based on the micro-sociology of ritualized everyday life. I use this framework to analyse the relational positions of two Roma girls in my ethnographic observations.
