Description | European identity politics constitutes an important field for the recent social theory as well as normative political imagination insofar as it raises questions regarding contemporary forms of legitimacy and social solidarity. European identity politics implies that the formation of European identity, like the construction of collective identities in general, involves cultural power struggles. My paper will inquiry the contemporary field of European identity politics as it is structured by four foundational narratives which ground collective identities as they are articulated in public, institutional, and academic debates. I claim that European identity is constructed in an antagonistic way, as politically situated actors perform the above-mentioned narratives through social practices that sustain the symbolic language within which issues are framed and claims for legitimacy made. |
