| Description | The study based on extensive field research describes important events which have led to changes in traditional clothing in the area of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. The establishment of the Wallachian Open-Air Museum, the first ethnographic festival called "1st Wallachian Year 1925", founding of folk dance groups, the era of socialism and post-revolutionary wave of renewed interest in folk costumes and folk traditions are among the most important ones. Since 1920s, traditional dress in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm has been a subject of stereotyping. The most significant agents influencing awareness of folk dressing in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm and in the broader region of Wallachia are folk dance groups. The spontaneous occasions for wearing folk dress include primarily religious processions, but also weddings or annual cycle customs. The motivation behind the needs of contemporary people to wear traditional costumes is the feeling of identity; traditional dress serves as a symbol of belonging to a particular local and regional tradition. The study endeavours to present an in-depth analysis of these processes of change and highlight the sociological as well as psychological aspects of maintaining local tradition. |
