Description The paper introduces shared reading in English as a foreign language classes and its benefits for the individual young language learners´communicative competence in a foreign language. The main attention is paid to the development of reading comprehension strategies. The paper focuses on the pre-service teacher preparation in this area. It describes how the 5th-year primary student teachers´ of the English Department,Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, are trained for shared reading sessions with individual young learners and how they learn to provide effective scaffolding.
