Description | At least since the beginning of the 18th century, the perception if Byzantium has been changing: the culture traditionally connected to the idea of empire becomes synonym of a religious fanaticism and violence. During the 19th century, this perception extends also to art. Likewise the entire Byzantine Empire, also its culture is considered decadent, uninteresting and inartistic. The lecture will present the idea that this perception and its fluctuations are determined by how Western culture sees Russia as a political, cultural and artistic entity. Negative and positive view of Russia and the Soviet Union is projected back to Byzantium, which is considered, in Russia as well as in the West, the moral and cultural foundation of the tsarist empire. The divergent thought about Russia thus casts light and shadows also to Byzantium… |
