Description | Campbell, Hess, Watson and Banks published the description of novel therapeutical method based on the amblyopic eye repetitive stimulation by arificially created, elementary visual stimuli and introduced a new therapeutical concept to the pleoptics in 1978. In fact, they introduced perceptual learning, previously theoretically defined by Gibson, to the practice. Today, the sound body of the evidence describe the therapeutic potency of repetitive presentation of the elementary visual stimuli to modify targeted low-level neural structures responsible for uncounscious integration of basic image elements in primary visual cortex. The visually deprived structures seems to be even more sensitive to perceptual learning. The experimental results confirming residual plasticity of mature visual system and illustrating the efficiency of the method in adult amblyopes are reviewed. The Hebbian principles of synaptic adaptation is applied to the perceptual learning and the competition of monocular signals for synaptic space on first binocular neurons in V1 is described. |
