| Description | The question about the influence of the urban development of the 19th century on the present appearance of the city of Brno is explored at this chapter. Brno is a city with an exceptionally well-preserved collection of architecture of the "long" 19th century (1780–1918), in particular of its second half. Apart from solitary neoclassical, historicist or art nouveau buildings, whole sets of buildings where constructed, inspired by the older urban structure and thus contributing to the profound transformation of the city. After the demolition of the city walls, a ring road inspired by the Viennese example was built with newly developed areas of apartment buildings or rows of houses around it. Since 1896 when the city council decided to support new works by exempting them from taxes, the historic center has undergone extensive renovation. Transitions from architecture to urban design are illustrated with selected examples from the period around 1900: construction of Rašínova and Průchodní Streets and of Konečný Square, or the street portals in 37–39, Tř. kpt. Jaroše Street and in Schodová Street, etc. The development of the cultural infrastructure of the city in a pursued time is mentioned at the end of the chapter. |
