Description Intraoperative ultrasound has become an essential part currently specialized surgical approaches. History of intraoperative ultrasound dates back to 1960, when it was first introduced in the evaluation of choledocholithiasis. The major limitations in that time were technological immaturity of equipment, poor image quality, unavailability of instruments. Continuous development then followed up in the 80's abroad and in the Czech Republic in the last decade. The intraoperative probes are now available for open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. It is a dynamic method, the advantage of intraoperative technique is direct contact of probe and the organ for reducing artifacts and increase the frequency of the probes. Intraoperative ultrasound is now an indispensable tool ofhepatobiliary surgeon in the area, provides key diagnostic information during surgery. Intraoperative ultrasound improves the results of resections and has an impact on operational planning as well as the overall clinical outcome. In the future, we can expect further development and use of methods including the use of contrast agents.
