Description | The development of problem-solving competence currently represents one of the main aims of school education. Using an example of assessing the quality of learning tasks in geography textbooks and in geography instruction, the book describes whether and to what extent geography instruction in lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic provides pupils with opportunities to solve geographical problems. The first part of the book synthesizes previously isolated pedagogical and psychological theories and empirical findings related to the educational application of problem solving. In the second part of the book, a research study on learning tasks in textbooks and in geography instruction is presented. Research results are interpreted in the context of contemporary reflection on the quality in education. The book aims not only to address the readers who are interested in problem solving and its use in (geography) instruction, but also to contribute to the debate on the state of the art of geography education in the Czech Republic. |
