Description | The presentation is an elaborated version of the paper "Primates and Philosophers or 'Harry! I'm comin' in!'", which was presented at the conference "The Boundaries of Philosophy, the Boundaries of Science". Its main aim is to show that the concept of empathy is applicable not only on outworn "looking at situation through the eyes of the other" but rather that it is a complex and multilayered phenomenon. And that is why the debate dedicated to it sometimes resembles proverbial Augeas stables or (as pointed out more fruitfully by Paul Ekman) the mine-field. The main part of presentation consists of an attempt to at least partially clean out this mess. The typology that has been designed by Philip Kitcher (to deal with the related phenomenon of altruism) is used as a pitchfork and applied on the concept of empathy. The subsequent detection of four basic dimensions of empathy leads to a better understanding of what these things called empathy really are. |
