Description | Written before 720, Vita Sancti Wilfridi by Eddius Stephanus is a significant work of early Anglo-Latin hagiography, roughly contemporary not only with earliest anonymous Anglo-Latin lives of saints – Vita Sancti Gregorii and Vita Sancti Cuthberti, but also Venerable Bede's prosaic Vita Sancti Cuthberti. The paper attempts to summarize the results of thorough analysis of the selected part of the Vita (chapters 1-32) from the point of view of its syntax and stylistics. Typical features are illustrated on excerpts from the Vita and compared with those of Venerable Bede's prosaic Vita Sancti Cuthberti. Attention is also paid to lexical and morphological peculiarities. The analysis and comparison aim to contribute to the general knowledge of the 8th-century Latin used in the British Isles. |
