Description This review paper is a brief introduction to the cognitive science of religion as interdisciplinary program for scientific study of religion and as academic field. We cover its short history, theoretical background, basic concepts, claims and methods. We also provide the selected list of threshold papers/books and introduce field authors in three scholar generations – from the rebelling theoretical childhood defined against the "standard" social science, humanities and religious studies; over the progressive experimental movement with the establishment of several specialized institutions; to the broad adult interdisciplinary present with it's ongoing integration of cognitive science and classical religious studies scholarship in the search for multi-level causal explanatory models. We defend the project as a possible open future for those part of religious studies, which strive to the ideal of integrated scientific study of religion not as self-standing category pointing to specific distinctive phenomenon, but as (an only) specifically framed study of human thinking and behavior.
