Description | Sedimentological study of fluvial deposits in the area of Mikulčice agglomeration was enabled by the new outcrop produced due to excavation of bridge No.1 Together 8 lithofacies, forming 5 depositional units, were identified. Depositional architecture of these units allows better understanding of the evolution of sedimentary processes in the studied area in time and space. The oldest deposits (Pleistocene in age) reveal deposition of mostly mid-channel bars and can be most probavbly connected with braided fluvial style. The capping deposits (Holocene in age) are on the other hand connected with meandering fluvial style. Fine grained overbank deposits were in the studied outcrop preserved only as an erosional relic. Point bar sediments strongly predominate in all studied sections of the outcrop. They document point bar lateral accretion due to gradual translation of the river flow. The top most part of the sedimentary succession reflects channel abandonment and affection of fluvial deposits by pedogenic processes. |
