Description | This paper deals with selected aspects of the German translation of Václav Hájek of Libočany's Czech Chronicle by Johann Sandel and first published between 1596 and 1598. Attention is particularly focused on the author's and translator's treatment of national-linguistic and denominational matters, while the selective comparison includes not only Hájek's Chronicle, but also older chronicle works from the Czech lands also available in translated versions. It turns out that religious subjects are much more vividly portrayed in Hájek's Chronicle and its translation, and at this level the translation indicates several adaptations based on the differing denominational standpoints of the author and the translator. |
