Description In this article Tocharian A lo, B lau and A lok, B lauke adv. "(a)far (off); away" and their derivatives are connected with the Indo-European etymon *dleH1/3?- "to be long" on the basis of the rule *dl > Tocharian l (similarly with other resonants). The continuants of this root are collected from all Indo-European branches with the exception of Armenian and analyzed from the point of view of their internal structure. Finally, the basic root and derivational patterns are reconstructed. In the last part the semantic shift "long" > "far" in various Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages is discussed within the perspective of semantic typology.
