| Description | In addition to a number of altar paintings, the exhibition presents for the first time the never exhibited portrait of Stern's most important employer Jan Leopold, the Count of Dietrichstein. This portrait represents painter's now lost, but by his contemporaries highly acclaimed, portrait work. The set of Stern’s famous oil sketches from the Moravian Gallery in Brno is accompanied by new works from private collections. Especially notable is a study for Stern's probably best work – the main altar painting in the pilgrimage church in Dub nad Moravou (1749–1750) and newly identified study for the painter's not preserved ceiling painting of Moravian Diet building (1771). In the second half of the 18th century, Stern was undoubtedly a leading figure in wall painting in Moravia. This area of his work is represented by frescos in two library halls and the chapel of the Kroměříž chateau, which harbours the exhibition. |
