Description | Ostrava-Karviná Area belonged under socialism between the economic cores and most supported regions of Czechoslovakia. After 1989, the situation has radically reversed in relation to political and then economic change. Region dependent on coal mining and heavy industry began to gradually fall until it became structurally affected and economically weak. The consequence of mentioned above is also a significant decrease in population due to migration and the birth of the phenomenon of shrinking cities in the Czech Republic. This paper deals with one of these cities, Karviná. Causes and effects of shrinking process are solved through the analysis of quantitative data, questionnaires with residents and semi-structured interviews with the actors. Proposal of possible measures to eliminate this undesirable phenomenon is an integral part of this text. |
