Description | Recurrent pleural effusion is not common in older age. It may be bilateral or unilateral. The etiology is often combined and of cardiorespiratory origin. A less frequent cause is malignant pleural mesothelioma. The difficult diagnosis, relative rarity and non-specific symptoms prolong the diagnostic process. Thus, subsequent options for effective therapeutic interventions are considerably limited. The authors point to this interesting issue by presenting a case report and summarizing the diagnostic and therapeutic options in the light of recent knowledge. |
