Description | Formation of the large aggregation sites of the Danubian Gravettian (Pavlovian) represents one of the effects of early modern human adaptation in central Europe, but details of the formative processes at such sites are still little understood. Here we present new evidence from Pavlov I, a site now prepared for a modern museum construction and subjected to a large-scale preparatory excavation. Our focus was on spatial organisation, microstratigraphies, and effects of cryogenic processes on the site formation processes. Obviously, these aggregation sites have a longer prehistory than has been presumed (25 - 33,2 ky uncalBP, or 29 – 38 ky calBP). One of the new contributions is detecting the Early Upper Paleolithic/Gravettian stratigraphic boundary, related to radical changes in settlement strategies, hunting preferences, and in lithic raw materials composition. |
