Description | Tumulus cemeteries from the area of Chřiby Hills, Kyjov Hills and Ždánice Forest: using GIS and simple statistics with spatial analyses. Examining spatial relations between archaeological components in effort to capture the social-geographic context of extinct societies is an indispensable part of archaeology. The paper tries to analyse tumulus cemeteries from the area of Chřiby, Kyjov Hills and Ždánice Forest. The work proceeded from detecting, geodetic survey, documentation of the current state of tumulus cemeteries in the area under investigation, and creation of new digital plans. This all was followed by spatial analysis of barrow fields in GIS environment and comparison with localities, which are classified today as flat burial grounds (but are considered to have originally been barrow fields), and with flat burial grounds, in which the original presence of barrows has been excluded. Another sphere of interest consisted of the assessment of possibilities how to protect barrow fields as historical monuments, and how to “predict” hypothetical settlement area belonging to the tumulus cemetery. |
