Description Pottery is the most abundant finding, which comes from archaeological excavations since neolithic. High and late middle ages make no exception. The aim of the article is to briefly summarize historical periods of pottery research, how did the methods used in the research developed and what questions were preferred.The four fundamental periods of the middle ages pottery research development in the area of the Czech republic are defined in the first part of the article. The second part is focused on descriptive systems as the most common method applied for the high and late middle ages pottery research. The third part deals with terminology for ceramic categories. Distinguishing of the categories is based on macroscopic description of ceramic body composition and technological features which are the main descriptive category of contemporary descriptive systems.
