Description Mediating feedback for students in accurate as well as effective ways has always been one of the key issues teachers of translation have had to resolve in very practical terms. The paper addresses the issue of providing quality feedback for students of translation by revisiting the translation error typology developed by MelLANGE group (Multilingual eLearning in Language Engineering, project concluded in 2007) as a basis for systematic error tagging for the purposes of teaching and research in translation pedagogy for translation from English into Czech (and vice versa). The paper draws on the extensive e-learning pool of student translations accumulated at the Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, and the possibilities offered by HYPAL, the hybrid parallel text aligner developed at the Department. The MelLANGE typology, presented by the original researcher group only in the form of an “error tree” (without definitions or examples), is tested against the English/Czech material, with insights from error-tagging by several teachers. The main outcome of the study is a discussion of category overlaps and lacunae, supplemented with some proposals for use in a translation classroom.
