Description This paper deals with the question of floodplain perception as an important landscape phenomenon providing a variety of ecosystem functions and services to human society. The primary endpoint of the study is to analyse the potential strengths and weaknesses of different approaches used to defining and delineating the floodplain area. Furthermore, the issues of significance of discussed approaches to defining the floodplain or river landscape are solved in the paper – especially in terms of their practical use, for instance in questions of nature and landscape conservation. The topic is analysed especially with regard to fluvial ecosystems of small watercourses, which are often overlooked – either because of their apparent insignificance, as well as the absence of sufficient data on which it could be determined accurately.
