Description The acquisition of laser induced plasma (LIP) is mostly preceded by an optimization of Laser- Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. The optimization is fine tuning of three main acquisition parameters (laser energy, gate delay and gate width) with respect to a required merit function. The merit function can be a single line intensity, signal to background ration or even more complicated calculations performed within measured spectra. This work concerns with variation of these basic acquisition parameters and their influence on the resulting LIBS measurement, i.e. spectrum. It is possible to mathematically determine the minimal change in each parameter that results in statistically significant change in spectra or the merit function. Similar works concerned with the influence of the various parameters or with the proper statistic3 description of the resulting spectra, but not with the minimal change in acquisition parameters observable in the spectrum with respect to its natural fluctuations.
