| Description | Moravia became the first transalpine sphere of activity for the Piarist order, specifically the college in Mikulov, which was founded by Cardinal Francis of Dietrichstein in 1631. Colleges, that were initially part of the province of Germania and since 1751 part of the newly divided province Czech-Moravian-Silesian, increased rapidly, especially in urban environments. By the end of the 18th century there were eight colleges and two residences in Moravia. From historical perspective, it is clear that the largest part of the order activities implemented from 1631 - 1780 in the Czech Lands. The piarists continued to operate extensive spiritual, educational, scientific and cultural activities, they gave the Czech lands and Europe number of outstanding personalities. As one of the few religious orders operating in the Habsburg monarchy the piarists remained spared extensive dissolution of the monasteries under Joseph II. |
