Description | The lecture deals with heteroglossia in historical English newspapers. Based on data from the 18th and 19th century British daily the Times, the paper documents several forms in which external (i.e., non-editorial) voices are present in the newspaper, more specifically in announcements of sports matches (football and cricket). Attention is paid to letters to the editor and classified advertising and a contrast is drawn between different editorial practices of handling football and cricket, which stems from the different cultural perception of the two sports throughout the 19th century. |
