Description | This chapter discusses the transformation changes and the recent modes and problems of the provision of local public services in two selected new EU member states – the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic and Slovakia have long common history and it is feasible to include both of them into the analysis. The first part of the chapter focuses on local self-government in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Second part of the chapter analyses local public delivery arrangements in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In this sub-chapter we first briefly introduce ‘socialist’ system of the delivery of local public services in the period 1948-1989 and afterwards we show the ways how old uniform system has been transformed into the current modes of delivery. Third part of the chapter builds on the previous and presents more detailed data about selected communal services (waste management and other). |
