Description | Acute ruptures of the Achilles tendon affect mainly middle aged adults. These injuries are increasingly frequent. The best treatment for an acute Achilles tendon rupture and a comparison between conservative and operative management, early versus late mobilisation and if operative management is selected, percutaneous versus open repair is debated. Rerupture is most common after conservative treatment and infection and skin healing complications after surgical repair. Percutaneous and minimally invasive techniques seem to offer good results in term of low risks of rerupture and complications. Clinical and functional outcomes are satisfactory. We consecutively evaluated 464 patients at an average follow up of 26 month ( range 18 - 33 months ) . We observed reruptures and complications after non - operative and operative treatment. These results suggest that percutaneous tendon repair and an early rehabilitaion provides satisfactory results with low complication rates. |
