| Description | The area of historical Pannonia, i.e. the Mid-Danube area, is considered to be a territory with the occurrence of mud houses. However, as the researches of the Hungarian ethnographers showed, the change in building material is a consequence of the modern liquidation of forest covers, so earth as a building material has been dominating since the 19th century here. A similar situation seems to have been in Central and South-Eastern Moravia where the building regulations forbade to use timber – due to its flammability – as the only building material. In addition to houses made solely of mud, buildings made of combination of both materials can be found in some areas of the observed region: 1) a timbered house coated with a thick layer of mud or 2) a wooden frame filled with mud, but in a way different from the one used in traditional timber-framed buildings. |
