Description | The aim of this study was to analyze epidermal ridge breadth (ERB) of human fingerprints and to develop new method for sex estimation according to the fingerprints in adult subjects. The study was conducted on 50 males and 50 females from Czech Republic in the age range of 18 to 70 years. Five ridges (excluding interstitial ridges) were measured at once in each angle of triradius in direction perpendicular to the prevailing course of the ridges: proximal angle (P) oriented in the direction towards distal interphalangeal flexion crease, lateral angle (L) oriented towards closer margin of the finger, and central angle (C) localized in the pattern area (towards the core). Thereafter the mean epidermal ridge breadth (MRB) was computed from the distance and the number of ridges (5) for each angle (P, L, C), triradius, finger, and individual. Measurements on randomly selected fingerprints (one in each individual) from intentionally limited group of 45 individuals aged from 20 to 35 years (17 males, 28 females) were used for further analyses. In females, mean MRB of 0.512 mm (SD = 0.065 mm), 0.400 mm (SD = 0.064 mm), and 0.394 mm (SD = 0.071mm) was recorded for P, L, and C triradial angle, respectively. In males, values of 0.568 mm (SD = 0.053 mm), 0.474 mm (SD = 0.072 mm), and 0.483 mm (SD = 0.053 mm) for mean MRB were recorded for P, L, and C triradial angle, respectively. The highest level of dimorphism was recorded in the angle C. The resubstitution validity of the newly established discriminant equation for sex estimation was 85.7% and 88.2% of correctly assigned cases for females and males, respectively. The results of discriminatory performance should be considered preliminary due to limited sample size. |
