| Description | Presbyter Orosius, who lived at the turn of the 4th and 5th century, wrote altogether seven books about the world history. The Historiae adversus paganos describes the events from the beginning of the world until the year 417 AD. Allegedly, he was required by St. Augustine to do so in a way that would support the conceptions in the latter’s work – De civitate Dei. This intention significantly affected the selection of events, which are described in Orosius‘ work. Despite that, the Historiae can serve as an interesting source of information about the period of the Roman Republic. In the list of wars, bad omens and many catastrophes, short mentions about the laws which were passed or revoked at that time can be found. I chose several of them and compare them with the texts written by other ancient authors, namely by Livy, Eutropius and Florus, as it is assumed that Orosius might have cooperated with them when writing his work. I remark on the differences and similarities in the dates, names, law making or law revocation processes as well as the contents of the laws. |
