Description | The aim of this paper is to outline the church milieu during the reigns of the first Komnenian emperors, present the most significant texts belonging to the respective ecclesiastical writings which focus on the aspects of a good and bad reign (e.g. a diatribe by John Oxeites, Panoplia dogmatike by Euthymios Zigabenos, or The Life of Cyril Phileotes by Nicholas Kataskepenos), judge whether they follow the prevailing interest in physical qualities while omitting spiritual features of the reign, and finally sketch the image of an ideal ruler that arises in these writings. |
