Description | Optimal imaging technique for accurate diagnosis and staging of lung cancer must be able to visualize and characterize lung nodules smaller than 3 cm and accurately assess tumor spread, including distant metastasis. In general, any imaging method should be cheap, safe, easily accessible and standardized. These general criteria, in patients with NSCLC, closely meets the plain chest X-ray. Potential of chest X- ray for the diagnosis of small tumors in the lungs and especially for staging is however limited. For this reason, at present, the main imaging method for diagnosis and staging of lung cancer is computed tomography (CT). In many cases, this method is supplemented or replaced by a hybrid imaging method like PET / CT. In some cases, even magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used, with benefit of absence of radiation exposure. |
