Description | Elections in Slovakia are well covered by the academic literature but a majority of studies focus on parliamentary and presidential elections. Despite the fact that regional elections have been held four times (in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013), the literature dealing with regional (and local) elections remains relatively scarce. Those few studies that analyze regional elections mainly provide a general overview of the election campaign and summarize the election results. Two major topics received special attention in the literature: the consistent low turnout in regional elections and the rationale for political parties to contest regional elections in electoral alliances. In this chapter we would like to extend the study on Slovak regional elections, and we ask the question in how far regional elections show their ‘own’ dynamic when compared to national elections. |
