Description At present gas from shale formation occurs in focus in the Czech Republic. As research has just started and accurate data are missing it is not possible to estimate an overall or an exploitable reserve yet. Concerning potential shale gas fields, three survey licenses have been applied for so far; all applications are still being administered. Shale gas fields survey though faces a public resistance. Representatives of local municipalities as well as local people themselves are afraid mainly of underwater contamination, damage to nature and to tourist industry. Also Regional authorities have been showing a negative approach. Survey activities have been rejected also by relevant Protection Landscape Areas (Polická Basin) as well as by various non-government organizations and civil organizations that established a civil organization called Koalice STOP HF in January 2012 covering all previous entities that is gathering signatures for a petition to ban utilization of hydraulic cracking in the territory of the Czech Republic and preparing a petition to European Parliament aimed to prohibit hydraulic cracking in EU.
