Description Functional gastrointestinal disorders constitute a very heterogeneous group of diseases which are rather complicated to classify and for which diagnostics are not always optimal. Patient care cannot be limited only to a gastroenterology specialist. Due to their high prevalence, a paediatrician’s role and competence in diagnostics and treatment are irreplaceable. The physician’s task is primarily to rule out organic disease, warning signs for which are the occurrence of indicative anamnestic data and symptoms supporting an organic origin for the stated complaints. Frequently, though not always, examination by a specialist and performance of specialized tests are therefore necessary. Treatment is usually long-term in nature, includes dietary, regimental, and medicinal measures, and requires good cooperation with the patient and his/her parents. Patients diagnosed with functional gastrointestinal disorders must be further monitored due to the possibility for more serious disease to develop, and, in such case, the necessity to perform timely and proper diagnostics. This paper presents an up-to-date overview of the state of knowledge on this topic with an emphasis on findings that are usable in practice.
